You will need to be an Eagle Eye to spot a Bittern in the Brush! This streaky, brown and buff heron is camouflaged in the reeds of freshwater marshes in North America. Looking very closely, you may be able to spot the bittern’s yellow eyes that give the bird’s face a comically startled, cross-eyed appearance. The bittern is known to strike the “concealment pose” when it perceives a threat. In this famous pose, the bittern points its bill skyward, elongates its body, and even sways with the breeze - all to blend in with its reedy surroundings.
The Bitterns in the Brush triptych has three enameled panels, each depicting a portion of the complete scene. The hammered surface texture increases the reflective sparkle and projects the bird forward from the background.
